Wednesday, September 30, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework and information for a Wednesday:

1.  ARTWALK TOMORROW!!!
*Weather is supposed to be beautiful.  Bring a sack lunch and enjoy the great works of art that we get to see.

2.  Math:  pages 19 and 20 for Thursday

Over the last two days we have begun working on our subtraction skills.  We noted that this was something we reviewed a bit last year in 3rd grade, but there really were not lessons covering it.

We reviewed how to borrow from numbers in other place vaules...especially with zeros.

4,000
-  299
_____

*Here we'd need to go all the way to the thousands place and ungroup from there.  Then we take that borrowed thousand and REDISTRIBUTE it over to the hundreds, the tens, and the ones place

3,99(10)
- 299
______
3,701

*Today we also reminded ourselves that we can check our subtraction by using addition.

10-7 = 3  Then we can take the difference (3), readd it to the 7 and get our original first number 10.

3.  Writing:  We're getting close to drafting our personal narratives (stories about ourselves).  Should be done in about 10 days.

4.  Reading:  Logs are due Monday

5.  Social Studies:  Test over unit 17 is FRIDAY!

6.  Words Their Way kicked off this week and tests are Friday

WOW!!  I think that is finally it!

Take care all,

MR. K

2.  Reading:  We finalized our Reading Goals today and got them up on the board.  Now we can start tracking out progress.  Look for a monthly update for parents starting at the end of October.

Thursday, September 24, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the work for a Thursday:

1.  Math:
*Note that Mangoes and Papayas have different homework due to the fact they took a test on Monday, they Kiwis did not get into the computer lad to take that test till today, that is why their homework if shorter

Pages 13 and 14 due for Friday  (Kiwis ONLY page 13)

We're working on addition with larger numbers.
We developed two unique ideas to help us out here.  One is a spatial issue.  If you simply take the smaller of the two numbers and rewrite that under the larger number, you can really save work space on your paper and make things a little easy on yourself:

Example:

24,123 + 4,113

Would look like

24,123
  4,113

The other method we talked about was using regular lined paper and turning the paper sideways and using the lines as guides to help with our place value alignment.  We also reminded folks that when we write these numbers in we should start lining up the ONES place then move out to the larger place values.

2.  Reading...frankly a long day...but we finally finished getting our DRA2 tests out to kids.  They worked hard this afternoon!  Thanks students!

3.  Writing:  We are developing the 5 senses into our Personal Narratives.  Sight, Smell, Taste, Touch, Sounds.

4.  Science:  Don't forget about the MOON OBSERVATIONS due TOMORROW!
*Harvest Moon Eclipse Sunday night from 9:00pm till 11:00pm.  Should be COOL!

That's all for today.  Take care.

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the work from a Wednesday:

1.  Math:  we took our first Mini (5 question) quiz today.  It's graded and returned.  It should be in their H and R booklet.  I like it there because it becomes a wonderful study guide for when the final test comes.

*No new lesson taught today though.  We reviewed and we'll kick into the next lesson tomorrow.
*So no new homework for Thursday

2.  Reading:  We set our OFFICIAL reading goals for the 4th grade Celebration today.
*I signed off on them, but I also want your input parents/guardians.  Please sign if you agree with the number of books that must be read by the end of March 2016.  If you feel the goal is incorrect, chat with your child and send me an email or a note on the back of the sheet ASAP.

3.  We also found out today our Words Their Way groups.  These were based off scores from the Spelling test we took the first week of school.  Our groups will meet on Mondays and Fridays.  Mrs. Fiore and Mr. Klanderman's groups will be relatively the same, but Mrs. Braymer's group will be focusing on the National Spelling Bee and thus their work will be a little different.

4.  I sent out an email to you all today about our 2 Field Trips that are coming up.  ArtWalk in Grand Haven next week and also our Lansing Trip on Wednesday, October 7.  Check out the details on the email.  Also, if for some reason you don't get it, contact me immediately.  I'll send it to you in "hardcopy" form.

Take care all,

Mr. K

Greetings one and all,

Here is what is going on for a Monday:

1.  Math:

Today was an abnormal day in Math.  We took the Delta Math assessment.  17 questions have focused on reviewing our skills from last year.  This gives us teachers another source of data to look at when checking to see how our kids are growing throughout the year.

Because of this...no lesson today...and thus NO HOMEWORK!!!

*Look for our first small "mini" quiz this week Wednesday.

2.  Writing/Reading:  Today we talked about using and hunting for "concrete" phrases.  These phrases give our writing LIFE and allow the reader to picture our writing better in their heads.  We used the books we were currently reading to find examples of these phrases and placed them around the room.

*Our class example from Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli was..."Like some fairytale tailor, he threaded the end through the maze, dipping and doodling through openings the way he squiggled a football through a defense."

3. Science:  OVER THE NEXT 5 WEEKS...students will need to do 2 MOON OBSERVATIONS each week.  They are due first thing Friday AM each week.

4.  A simple ArtWalk activity by coloring the page with blue colors.  $5 if you turn it in tomorrow...but it is optional.

That's all for today folks,

Take care.

Thursday, September 17, 2015

Greetings,

OK, Mr. K should be on time here today:

Here is the homework for a Thursday:

1.  Math:  H and R pages 7 and 8

*In the planners I had the kids write that I didn't give them any time to start the work, so know that they are beginning from scratch tonight.

*Not too tricky, but...

Same lesson as Tuesday night, using Expanded, Word, and Standard Notation, only with larger numbers.  (in some cases all the way to the millions place)

*Check Tuesday's blog for a reminder of those terms.

Good simple night of work, but read those DIRECTIONS carefully!

2.  Reading:  We really talked about my READ ALOUD today.  I love reading to the kids and I can teach a lot of different concepts to them while I read.

*We are highlighting the author Jerry Spinelli this month, and I'm reading Maniac Magee to them.  Today we talked about AUTHOR'S STYLE.  I had the kids brainstorm things they liked about Spinelli's way of writing.  They came up with great stuff like...the depth of his details, they like the way he makes characters imperfect, also his use of strange words (runt, thanks Emma!)  Talk with them about authors you like at home!

3.  There is a white note going home today about ART WALK.  Sept. 29.  Our first Field Trip.  Sign the bottom and return tomorrow please.

That's about all today.  Looking forward to a great Friday!

Take care.

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework and discussion for a Tuesday night:

Math  Unit 1:  Lesson 2

*H and R pages 3 and 4 for Wednesday

Today, we continued to work with identifying PLACE VALUE, but we introduced 3 ways in which numbers can be written.

1.  Standard Form:  Simply the way we are used to writing numbers.  If our example is 932.  The 9 is in the hundreds place, the 3 is in the tens place, and the 2 is in the ones place.

2.  Word Form:  In this case we write the number out using words.  If our example is 932 once again, we'd write the number as, nine hundred thirty-two.
(It is important to note that a hyphen goes between the tens and the ones digit, but it's not something we will take points off for...just be aware)
*Also note...no AND in any of that!

3.  Expanded Form:  In this case we are taking each number and stretching it out using the + symbol to show the value of each place.

900 + 30 + 2

Each number is given the value of it's place.

Reading:  We did the Dibels testing today (we're looking at speed and fluency with this test)

Writing:  We're working on personal narratives to begin the year.  We listed some of our favorite people and places today.  Check with your students about who they listed, and maybe some more ideas that would be good for them to write about.

****Picture Day on Thursday this week!

Thanks.

Greetings one and all,

Hey...going home today is the ORANGE pad for notes to the office and teacher.  Those are super helpful and stand out really well on my desk.  Please try to use those as much as possible.

Here is the work for a Monday night;

1.  Math:  (all groups)  pages 1 and 2  (due Tuesday)
*We are starting off the year working on place value.  We're working with the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place.
*Simple stuff here.  Don't make it tricky, just follow the directions.  Ignore the work QUICK, quick tens are still just talking about the 10s place.
*Dots for ones, sticks/lines for 10s, boxes/squares for 100s, and rectangles for 1,000s

2.  Reading Log starts tonight.  We went over in class today how to fill this out in our blue planner.
*150 minutes by next Monday is the requirement.

3.  Reading:  We worked on the AHA moment today.   Have your student tell you what that is.

That's all for today.

Take care.

Greetings one and all,

Here is the news for a Wednesday in Mr. K's Fourth Grade:

1.  We finished up the Klanderman Handbook today.  Students are taking the ENTIRE packet home.  That packet is for YOU AT HOME!!!  Good stuff in there.  Keep it in a place where you will know where to find it.

*All you need to do is tear off the front cover, sign it, and return it to Mr. K tomorrow (Thursday).

2.  We started doing some writing today (personal narratives).  Ask your kids to share the ideas they generated and also give them some more ideas of stories they could write about themselves.

3.  We used Pic Collage on our ipads today to create collage about us.  Fun stuff.

*Our new Superintendent Mr. Ingall stopped by today to say HI as well.

It was a good, full day.

Take care.

Greetings New Students and Parents,

Wow!  What a great 1st Day of school, other than the rain!  HA!

Hot and humid, but your kids were amazing.

Nothing really to worry about tonight.  If you haven't turned in the student information sheets yet, please do so by this week Friday.  Most are in thanks to having them out at Open House.

We did introduce our World Changer:

1706-1790
Scientist, Writer, and Inventor
One of our Founding Fathers
Discovered the elements of electricity with his kite and key trick, as well as invented bifocal glasses.

Some of the students wanted to take home a fun Quiz we took today.  The intention was to show them how I will NOT do assessments this way.  It was fun.

Looking forward to tomorrow already!  Take care and bring on the cooler weather!

Sincerely,

Mr. K
