Monday, December 14

Happy Holiday's one and all,

Just a reminder to make sure to continue to send your sons/daughters with warm coats, hats, and gloves here in the next week.

Also, the Holiday Music show will be tomorrow morning around 9am or whenever the kids get their stuff set up. Please feel free to come if you'd like.

Thursday's Holiday Party will take place from 3-3:40. There is a plan for a game, a snack, and a "White Elephant" gift exchange. We went over what this is in class today. Please, do not feel you need to purchase something. Send in the nasty ornament that you always put at the back of the tree, or that Christmas CD that you never listen to because it is SO awful. You know, something we'll get a giggle out of.

Friday will be a pretty laid back day. COMPLIMENT PARTY (finally! been postponed twice!) as well as a craft and creating a gift for our 2nd grade buddies ($1 donation for that is appreciated)

Homework tonight:

1. Math: pages 97 and 99 (due Tuesday)

2. Math: Unit 4 test will be Thursday morning (first thing)

Take care all,

Mr. K

Tuesday, December 8

Greetings on a snowy Tuesday,

Here is tonight's homework:

1. Westing Game Packets and book should go home tonight. The packets do not need to be completed, but it is a great opportunity to get a few characters filled in minimally.

2. Math Tests (unit 3) MUST BE TURNED IN WED!

3. Math pages 93 and 94 (Wed)

4. Copy of your latest Writing needs to go home tonight (some may be printed, others will simply be in written form in their writer's notebook)
*This is not in final draft form currently. The final is due on Friday.
*Don't correct EVERYTHING in your son/daughters writing. Simply be a sounding board. Ask questions about missing details. Give ideas, but this isn't a grammar lesson where EVERY single error NEEDS to be perfect.

That's all for tonight. Thanks.

MR.K

Wednesday, December 2

Hey everyone,

Wow! A lot of hard work was done today. I feel like I worked the kids pretty hard, so don't be surprised if they are a little tired, especially after the nice week off.

*Just a reminder that I will be gone on a personal day on Friday (my grandma turns 80 on Saturday in western Wisconsin so we are driving out on Friday morning, should be fun in the SNOW!!)

We had a tough/long math test today, so NO math homework tonight.

1. Do the 1st word SORT tonight and have your son/daughter show you how we sorted the words in class today. Also, start identifying any words that might become tricky as we focus on how they are spelled later this week.

2. Some students will be taking home their Writer's Notebook as our 2nd piece of published writing is due on Friday, December 11

*A note concerning the Winter Klanderman Auction will come home tomorrow as well. Get ready!

*Autumn, Zack, Quentin, Addy, and Drew all volunteered food for tomorrow's Spanish food day, thanks to all five of you! Remember we just need enough for a class of 26 to SAMPLE those items.

Take care all,

Mr. K

Tuesday, December 1

Welcome back to one and all!

We are rolling once again! Here is what is going on with a busy Tuesday:

1. Math: pages 78 and 79 (due Wed)
Math Unit 3 test will also be on Wednesday! We reviewed today and the kids know what and how to study.

2. Word Study (Spelling) kicked off today. The kids are ONLY supposed to cut out their sorts tonight. Tomorrow you will get to actually practice the sort.

3. Science: Parent Letter comes home tonight

4. Social Studies: (only homework for those who did not finish in class) Writing Assessment

*For Spanish on Thursday I need ten individual food items. These can be anything common that we could sample. For example crackers (one box would work as we only need to sample the food for Spanish class. I also need to know what items are coming in, so if you could just let me know on the short notice by tomorrow, that would be great. Again, we do NOT need all of you to participate, but if you have something easy that we could use as a model for Spanish class, that would be great.)

Thanks,

Mr. K

Greetings One and All,

First of all hang in there another day on the official chaperone for camp list. I have a ton of names and only a few can be "official", so I'll announce ASAP, but there are a couple variables, I appreciate your patience.

Next, on Friday's note home I said I'd send the Math tests home today, but the kids fixed them up for partial credit and I need to score them again tonight, so they will be home on Tuesday, not today.

Here is the homework:

Math: page 33 (due Tuesday)

Tuesday, September 29

Greeting everyone,

First of all, sorry...It is currently 8:51pm as I write this. I realize that is not very helpful to most of you. I only have two words as my excuse:

FREE GOLF!!!

A couple friends and I heard that Pigeon Creek was all you can play for free today so I ran out of school and squeezed 18 holes in before dark and about the 4th hole I remembered that I hadn't written this yet. OOPS!

Here's the homework for tonight:

1. Math: pages 31 and 32
*Test Thursday (study meetings at both morning recesses the next two days)

2. Ultimate School Projects due Friday, Oct. 9
*Start early, don't go too big. I would encourage the drawing route, unless you have your heart set on an alternative idea.

Take care all, I will be quicker getting this up tomorrow!

MR. K

Monday, September 28, 2009

Monday, September 28

Greetings on another Monday folks,

Another great weekend has come and gone and we are fresh and ready for a new week, so here is the homework:

1. Math: pages 29 and 30 (we did #3 in class)
The remembering section will count as a mini-quiz tomorrow (1-12)

*Remember that Thursday will be our first Unit Test. I'll have them ready to go!

2. Ultimate School Project due on Friday, Oct. 9
*Your kids are bringing home a sheet that explains this assignment. For those who have had me in the past, these project have gotten BIG, I don't really want to go that route this time. I want to focus on the ideas, not on GIANT displays. Let the kids follow this where they wish. It's a great early test of TIME MANAGEMENT! Good luck. Help organize, but overall hands off mom and dad!

*A note about the Camp Pendalouan fundraiser will be coming home in a day or so, get ready, it's an easy one!

Take care.

Mr.K

Happy Thursday Everyone,

A good week is nearly over, and here is what is expected for the remainder of the week:

1. Math: pages 27+28 (due Friday)
There are a couple of extra credit opportunities out there. The multiplication x's tables as well as creating a worksheet off of tonight's mini-table concept

*Don't forget our first math test will be a week from today (Thursday, Oct. 1)
I will actually show the test to the kids on Wednesday so they get a feel for how it will look as well as what will generally be there. Their homework pages and notebooks will be great study guides to bring home on Wednesday night.

2. Writing: Rough Drafts of the personal narratives are due tomorrow. (Don't worry they're just rough drafts, they don't even need to be very good.)

That's all for now guys. Have a great Thursday night.

Greetings everyone,

Sorry, it's about 5:00 now that I'm getting to this, but here is tonight's homework:

1. Math: pages 23 and 24 (a very good homework page, I really urged the kids to work on this alone tonight as a real test to see if they could "struggle" through it without having to ask Mom and Dad a ton of questions.)

*The first Math test will be next Thursday, Oct. 1. (Don't worry, you'll all be ready!)

Take care.

Hi Everyone,

Hope your weekend went well! Busy, but good days here in the room for sure!

Here is what is up tonight:

1. Social Studies Quiz tomorrow (study guide included, and everyone should have it home)
The kids took a pre-quiz today and many of those questions will be on tomorrow's quiz

2. Math: 5 student made story problem worksheet. We are working on creating our own story problems , there are 5 different varieties that the kids experimented with.

3. The kids are currently finishing up rough drafts of their first personal narrative essays. Most of this should be done in class, but I want them by Friday so if they are not finished by Wednesday or Thursday they may need to take them home.

Girl's elementary basketball sign-up sheets went home tonight, that is the league that I will coach here at school, so I'd love to have you sign-up, but remember the $ doesn't go to me, you need to send it in to the NORP office!

Take care all. See you tomorrow class.

Hello Everyone,

Homework tonight:

1. Math pages 19 and 20 (due Thursday)
*Quick note with the homework tonight. We are working on our multiplication review tables, but in a bit of a different format, the pattern of a sudoku (not sure how to spell that?) puzzle. Basically we are matching up factors on the outside column and row, with products in the middle.

If your son/daughter spends more than 30 minutes on it, allow them to stop and just sign the bottom. Don't spend hours on this one please. I will be available at morning recess tomorrow for questions as well.

That's it for tonight. Thanks folks.

MR. K

Hey everyone,

My apologies for those of you who looked for the update last night. I got in this morning and just remembered that I didn't Blog last night. Friday, September 11

Greetings on a Friday!

A wonderful first week of school is about to come to an end. No new homework over the weekend, in fact I do not plan on giving homework over the weekend ever unless we get behind or a big test is upcoming and I will push for doing some studying on Sat and Sunday. I know you guys are busy and hey, you need to spend time just being a family!

The only thing I would still require would be to ask your son/daughter to still read a minimum of 20 minutes per day. NO DAYS OFF ON THIS ONE! KEEP THE IDEA ROLLING TILL IT IS REALLY DRILLED IN!

For Monday:

1. Make sure you're ready for gym (gym shoes please!, non-marking)
2. Make sure your writer's notebook cover is decorated
3. Make sure any and all information papers have been turned into Mr. K (office papers, and Mr. K papers)

*Last but not least, I hope to see you all on Thursday night at Open House, a note went home yesterday
I'll see all of you from 7-7:30pm (I'm going to get started right away, I want to chat with you about my basic expectations specifically from you as parents concerning my views on homework, communication between you and I, and also concerning the help I'll need from you during the year. Come ready to take some notes or to just absorb.)

7:30-8 Book Fair

8-8:20 or so will be an information meeting on Camp Pendalouan (if you've had 5th graders who have experienced this before, nothing has really changed so you can skip if you wish, but the kids might still find it interesting.

Take care and have a great weekend everyone!

MR. K

Thanks for you patience everyone, and I have loved how if you have a question you just ask, that's awesome. I'm a bit slow answering sometimes, but the answer will come. Again, thanks for your patience.

Have a great day,

Tuesday, September 8

Hey everyone,

Wow! What a great day of school. I felt good to be back, especially with a group like ours. Not only are they good looking, polite, and thoughtful in conversation, but they are just simply cool people. Thanks parents for sharing them with me for this year.

Tonight's Homework:

1. Parent Packet (if that could come in by Friday it would be AWESOME. Sorry to give the parents so much homework on the first night.)

2. The Klanderman Handbook will come home tomorrow with just a couple things to sign and talk about with your kids. Look for that tomorrow.

That's it. Pretty easy for a first night. We'll gradually build to about 30-40 minutes of homework per night, but hopefully no more.

Thanks guys, I look forward to seeing you on our first "normal" day of school tomorrow.

See ya tomorrow,

Mr. K

Night before the 1st Day of School

Good evening class,

Well, here we are. I hope all of you are getting a great nights sleep, tomorrow's the BIG day. I always am a little nervous the night before the 1st day. Seems weird right? I mean, I'm the one who actually knows about all of the cool things we are going to experience together tomorrow, I should be relaxed. I'm not worried, I think it's more just that I'm excited and eager! I don't know you guys that well YET, and I know you don't know me that well YET either. That makes all of us anxious. But trust me when I tell you that I feel this every year...and you know what...every year has been GREAT! I know that sounds cheesy but it's true. I know this year will be great, and you are going to learn a lot, and I'm going to learn a lot from you as well. So I just wanted to say sleep well, and I can't wait to see you in the morning.
