Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Monday night:

Math:

1.  All groups...pages 77 and 78 for Tuesday!

*No worries tonight, just some more practice.  I like probems 1-3 that made you focus on finding the patterns that exist looking at our 3 key parts to a division problem (divisor, dividend, and the quotient).

*Give that Stretch your thinking at try.  Don't let the size of the problem bog you down.  It's not has hard as it seems.  Also, don't lose sleep over it.  It's just a problem.  Give it a try, have fun, and move on.

*Test NEXT WEDNESDAY!!!  You'll ACE it!

2.  Science:  All vocabulary cards are due Friday.  There will be a total of 21.

3.  Social Studies:  Unit 3 test Friday

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Tuesday night:

1.  Math:  HARD COVER BOOK page 103 (problems 6-17)
*Also...Mango and Papaya groups need to complete REMEMBERING page 72

*We're continuing to work on long division.  Our new twist today was...what happens when the first number of the dividend is TOO small to allow the divisor to take numbers out of it?

Example:  2134 divided by 9...There are zero amounts of 9 than can be taken out of the 2, but we simply include the second number...now we ask...how many 9s can be taken out of 21!

Here is a great video example:

*Don't forget that TOMORROW (Wed) is our 2nd COMPLIMENT party of the year.  We're playing GAMES.  Please bring in a game (board/cards) we can play.  We especially want to do an UNO tournament, so if you have a set of UNO cards to use we'd appreciate it.  Please label things.

*Thanks to those who have already donated items to the Winter Klanderman Auction on Friday, December 18.  Keep those items coming in!

2.  NO WTW this week (Spelling)

3.  No Reading Logs due next Monday, but READ and grab some projects for over the long WEEKEND!!!

Bonus video!!!

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Wednesday night:

1.  Math:  The kids did a great job on their 5 question 2-digit by 2-digit quiz today!!!!!  Even if they got a couple wrong, they quickly found their mistakes.

*We're completely on the traditional method now.

Today's lesson was actually an even easier concept of using numbers in the thousands place and multiplying them by one digit.  In this case it's simply an aspect of moving the multiplication along and carrying correctly.

Homework was 59 and 60 ALL of it for Thursday.

*Tried to publish a video here.  Didn't work.  Stay tuned for future efforts!

2.  Social Studies Test will once again be on Monday, Nov. 16
Chapter 2
*Study your vocabulary words tonight!

3.  Words their Way test are Friday again.  You should be studying a little each night.

*Fun Friday...PJ day!!!!  Please wear clean pajamas!

Thanks all folks.

Mr. K

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Tuesday night:

1.  Math:  pages 57 and 58

*Ignore the directions...I want JUST PRACTICE WITH TRADITIONAL METHOD!!!
*You even can ignore the estimations, but they're great for double checking your work.
*Different groups have different amounts of work as well.  Please check with your son/daughter and don't be surprised if they tell you they get to skip a few problems...it's OK.

All groups...please save the stretch your thinking on page 58 for a class warm-up on Wednesday.

Mini Quiz tomorrow!!!  I really want to push the kids to use the Traditional Method, it will be the simplest form going forward.

Unit 2 Test NEXT Wednesday, November 18.

2.  Social Studies Test over Chapter 2 of the book will be next Monday.
*Don't forget our new study techniques I stressed to parents at Conferences
Vocabulary words, pictures, and captions!!!

3.  Writing:  We've moved to Persuasive Essays/Letters.
Ask your kids what their new topic is.

*Remember Reading Logs will once again be due next Monday.  Get those 150 minutes in!

Monday, November 9, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here we are back from a great week of conferences.  Thanks truly to all of you for a fun and really enlightening couple nights of conversation.  You all were wonderful!

Here is the work for a Monday night:

1.  Math:

*pages 55 and 56

Great practice for all groups.

2 digit by 2 digit multiplication.  We're really pushing the Traditional/Old School method that we all learned while growing up.

Please also note that even though the directions occasionally say to use some other method...I want the kids practicing with this traditional method from here on out!!!

Help, if you need to...but really we're just going to continue to practice over the next few days.  Really, no new twists or turns ahead, just review before NEXT week Wednesday's test (Nov. 18)

Here is a great link found by Mrs. Braymer for a little parent help too:

http://elemmath.jordandistrict.org/homework-help-fourth/

2.  Social Studies:  Chapter 2 test next week Monday, Nov. 16

3.  Words Their Way:  Back to normal...new lists went out tonight, test Friday.

4.  Reading:  logs are due once again next week Monday...get those 150 minutes done!!!

Mr. K's World Changer:  the man who invented the modern elevator

*Library books due tomorrow (Tuesday)

That's all folks,

Mr. K

Monday, November 2, 2015

Monday, November 2, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the news and homework for a Monday night:

1.  Math:  All groups pages 51 and 52, but....

Mango and Papaya:  These groups are experimenting with a new technique with 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication called the Area Model Method.  Looks something like this:

big rectangle.png

Once we have found products for these 4 problems, we take them and simply add them together for the answer to our larger 25 x 42 problem.

Kiwis:  We simply started right into the traditional/"old School" method that all of us learned.

*Unit 2 Math test will be Wednesday, November 18

Reading:  No worries on Reading logs for this week.  Just enjoy reading on your own and work on some projects over the Conference break.

*Make sure you check your conference times.  Looking forward to seeing you all either Tuesday night, Wednesday, or Thursday afternoon.

Take care.

Mr. K

Thursday, October 29, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework/news for a Thursday:

1.  Math:

*Unique day...we had an assembly from 9:45-10:30, so the PAPAYA group did not have Math today.
So...the homework for Kiwis and Mangoes is pages 49 and 50 (we're working on Story problems)  Those groups will not have homework over the weekend.

Papaya group will get the lesson tomorrow, but they will need to do the homework for MONDAY!!!

2.  Words Their Way Spelling tests tomorrow.

3.  Reading Logs:  Check-in with your kids on how their doing on these.  They are right in their planners.  You'll see orange stars or numbers.  Stars are good.  Numbers count the weeks they have not completed the goal.  Remember you only get 5 incomplete weeks.

***Halloween Party tomorrow.

2:15 Recess and you can get your costume on then

2:30 The annual Peach Plains Parade

2:45 Back in the Room for Games and Food

3:45 Dismissal...you may take your kids directly from the party, please just let me know when you do.

Take care.

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework on a Tuesday night:

1.  Math:  pages 45 and 46

*Please make sure to note, that when directions talk about several of the "different" methods of multiplication...students are now at the point where they may make their own CHOICE of which method works best.  Most of those methods are SUPER SIMILAR and just redundant.

2.  Science:  Please study your journals for your test on Thursday.

*Worlds Changer for the week:  The man who created the American Dictionary

That's all folks,

Mr. K

Monday, October 19, 2015

Monday, October 19, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Tuesday night:

***Make sure to get your conference requests in TOMORROW (tuesday)!  PLEASE****

1.  Math:  H and R pages 35 and 36
(Kiwi group, does not need to do 7 on page 35 or the Stretch your thinking, we'll tackle those in class)

Please look at the example on page 35 for a great model of the Area Method of multiplication.  We are continuing to focus on place value.

*I introduced the "traditional" multiplication method to the Mango group.  They must do #2 with the area model method, but they have the choice from there forward.  Tomorrow I'll introduce that method to the other groups.

2.  Writing:  All personal narrative final drafts are due Friday.  Ask you're student where they're at in the process.  This is not something they really can work on at home, they must use school time effectively, and I feel like they're doing a nice job.  Writing will be available to be shared during conference time.

3.  Social Studies Test this Thursday!!!  Chapter 1!

**The first Reading goal updates will go home this Friday as well.  You'll have a good idea of where they've started out before our conference then.

That's all folks,

Take care.

MR. K

Thursday, October 15, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Thursday night:

1.  Math:  H and R pages 33 and 34

*We're currently working on the process of pulling multiplication problems apart to better understand them.  We want to be able to understand the place value of each number in the multiplication.

Example:

40 x 70  (4 x 10) x (7 x 10)
              (4 x 7) x (10 x 10)
               28 x 100
               2, 800

Also...understand the progression of zeros

2 x 6 = 12
2 x 60 = 120
2 x 600 = 1,200

*Don't forget about the class COMPLIMENT party tomorrow!  They've been great examples within the school and deserve a chance to relax and celebrate great classroom responsibility!  Bring in a PG or under movie, and a snack to mix and share.

That's all for today folks,

MR. K

Wednesday, September 30, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework and information for a Wednesday:

1.  ARTWALK TOMORROW!!!
*Weather is supposed to be beautiful.  Bring a sack lunch and enjoy the great works of art that we get to see.

2.  Math:  pages 19 and 20 for Thursday

Over the last two days we have begun working on our subtraction skills.  We noted that this was something we reviewed a bit last year in 3rd grade, but there really were not lessons covering it.

We reviewed how to borrow from numbers in other place vaules...especially with zeros.

4,000
-  299
_____

*Here we'd need to go all the way to the thousands place and ungroup from there.  Then we take that borrowed thousand and REDISTRIBUTE it over to the hundreds, the tens, and the ones place

3,99(10)
- 299
______
3,701

*Today we also reminded ourselves that we can check our subtraction by using addition.

10-7 = 3  Then we can take the difference (3), readd it to the 7 and get our original first number 10.

3.  Writing:  We're getting close to drafting our personal narratives (stories about ourselves).  Should be done in about 10 days.

4.  Reading:  Logs are due Monday

5.  Social Studies:  Test over unit 17 is FRIDAY!

6.  Words Their Way kicked off this week and tests are Friday

WOW!!  I think that is finally it!

Take care all,

MR. K

Monday, September 28, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the work on a Monday:

2.  Reading:  We finalized our Reading Goals today and got them up on the board.  Now we can start tracking out progress.  Look for a monthly update for parents starting at the end of October.

3.  Writing:  We create our Story Mountains today for our personal narratives.  Final choices for our topics must be stated by the end of the day Wednesday.

That's all for today.  Take care.

Mr. K

Thursday, September 24, 2015

Thursday, September 24, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the work for a Thursday:

1.  Math:
*Note that Mangoes and Papayas have different homework due to the fact they took a test on Monday, they Kiwis did not get into the computer lad to take that test till today, that is why their homework if shorter

Pages 13 and 14 due for Friday  (Kiwis ONLY page 13)

We're working on addition with larger numbers.
We developed two unique ideas to help us out here.  One is a spatial issue.  If you simply take the smaller of the two numbers and rewrite that under the larger number, you can really save work space on your paper and make things a little easy on yourself:

Example:

24,123 + 4,113

Would look like

24,123
  4,113

The other method we talked about was using regular lined paper and turning the paper sideways and using the lines as guides to help with our place value alignment.  We also reminded folks that when we write these numbers in we should start lining up the ONES place then move out to the larger place values.

2.  Reading...frankly a long day...but we finally finished getting our DRA2 tests out to kids.  They worked hard this afternoon!  Thanks students!

3.  Writing:  We are developing the 5 senses into our Personal Narratives.  Sight, Smell, Taste, Touch, Sounds.

4.  Science:  Don't forget about the MOON OBSERVATIONS due TOMORROW!
*Harvest Moon Eclipse Sunday night from 9:00pm till 11:00pm.  Should be COOL!

That's all for today.  Take care.

MR. K

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the work from a Wednesday:

1.  Math:  we took our first Mini (5 question) quiz today.  It's graded and returned.  It should be in their H and R booklet.  I like it there because it becomes a wonderful study guide for when the final test comes.

*No new lesson taught today though.  We reviewed and we'll kick into the next lesson tomorrow.
*So no new homework for Thursday

2.  Reading:  We set our OFFICIAL reading goals for the 4th grade Celebration today.
*I signed off on them, but I also want your input parents/guardians.  Please sign if you agree with the number of books that must be read by the end of March 2016.  If you feel the goal is incorrect, chat with your child and send me an email or a note on the back of the sheet ASAP.

3.  We also found out today our Words Their Way groups.  These were based off scores from the Spelling test we took the first week of school.  Our groups will meet on Mondays and Fridays.  Mrs. Fiore and Mr. Klanderman's groups will be relatively the same, but Mrs. Braymer's group will be focusing on the National Spelling Bee and thus their work will be a little different.

4.  I sent out an email to you all today about our 2 Field Trips that are coming up.  ArtWalk in Grand Haven next week and also our Lansing Trip on Wednesday, October 7.  Check out the details on the email.  Also, if for some reason you don't get it, contact me immediately.  I'll send it to you in "hardcopy" form.

Take care all,

Mr. K

Monday, September 21, 2015

Tuesday, September 21, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is what is going on for a Monday:

1.  Math:

Today was an abnormal day in Math.  We took the Delta Math assessment.  17 questions have focused on reviewing our skills from last year.  This gives us teachers another source of data to look at when checking to see how our kids are growing throughout the year.

Because of this...no lesson today...and thus NO HOMEWORK!!!

*Look for our first small "mini" quiz this week Wednesday.

2.  Writing/Reading:  Today we talked about using and hunting for "concrete" phrases.  These phrases give our writing LIFE and allow the reader to picture our writing better in their heads.  We used the books we were currently reading to find examples of these phrases and placed them around the room.

*Our class example from Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli was..."Like some fairytale tailor, he threaded the end through the maze, dipping and doodling through openings the way he squiggled a football through a defense."

3. Science:  OVER THE NEXT 5 WEEKS...students will need to do 2 MOON OBSERVATIONS each week.  They are due first thing Friday AM each week.

4.  A simple ArtWalk activity by coloring the page with blue colors.  $5 if you turn it in tomorrow...but it is optional.

That's all for today folks,

Take care.

MR. K

Thursday, September 17, 2015

Thursday, September 17, 2015

Greetings,

OK, Mr. K should be on time here today:

Here is the homework for a Thursday:

1.  Math:  H and R pages 7 and 8

*In the planners I had the kids write that I didn't give them any time to start the work, so know that they are beginning from scratch tonight.

*Not too tricky, but...

Same lesson as Tuesday night, using Expanded, Word, and Standard Notation, only with larger numbers.  (in some cases all the way to the millions place)

*Check Tuesday's blog for a reminder of those terms.

Good simple night of work, but read those DIRECTIONS carefully!

2.  Reading:  We really talked about my READ ALOUD today.  I love reading to the kids and I can teach a lot of different concepts to them while I read.

*We are highlighting the author Jerry Spinelli this month, and I'm reading Maniac Magee to them.  Today we talked about AUTHOR'S STYLE.  I had the kids brainstorm things they liked about Spinelli's way of writing.  They came up with great stuff like...the depth of his details, they like the way he makes characters imperfect, also his use of strange words (runt, thanks Emma!)  Talk with them about authors you like at home!

3.  There is a white note going home today about ART WALK.  Sept. 29.  Our first Field Trip.  Sign the bottom and return tomorrow please.

That's about all today.  Looking forward to a great Friday!

Take care.

MR. K

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework and discussion for a Tuesday night:

Math  Unit 1:  Lesson 2

*H and R pages 3 and 4 for Wednesday

Today, we continued to work with identifying PLACE VALUE, but we introduced 3 ways in which numbers can be written.

1.  Standard Form:  Simply the way we are used to writing numbers.  If our example is 932.  The 9 is in the hundreds place, the 3 is in the tens place, and the 2 is in the ones place.

2.  Word Form:  In this case we write the number out using words.  If our example is 932 once again, we'd write the number as, nine hundred thirty-two.
(It is important to note that a hyphen goes between the tens and the ones digit, but it's not something we will take points off for...just be aware)
*Also note...no AND in any of that!

3.  Expanded Form:  In this case we are taking each number and stretching it out using the + symbol to show the value of each place.

900 + 30 + 2

Each number is given the value of it's place.

Reading:  We did the Dibels testing today (we're looking at speed and fluency with this test)

Writing:  We're working on personal narratives to begin the year.  We listed some of our favorite people and places today.  Check with your students about who they listed, and maybe some more ideas that would be good for them to write about.

****Picture Day on Thursday this week!

Thanks.

Greetings one and all,

Hey...going home today is the ORANGE pad for notes to the office and teacher.  Those are super helpful and stand out really well on my desk.  Please try to use those as much as possible.

Here is the work for a Monday night;

1.  Math:  (all groups)  pages 1 and 2  (due Tuesday)
*We are starting off the year working on place value.  We're working with the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place.
*Simple stuff here.  Don't make it tricky, just follow the directions.  Ignore the work QUICK, quick tens are still just talking about the 10s place.
*Dots for ones, sticks/lines for 10s, boxes/squares for 100s, and rectangles for 1,000s

2.  Reading Log starts tonight.  We went over in class today how to fill this out in our blue planner.
*150 minutes by next Monday is the requirement.

3.  Reading:  We worked on the AHA moment today.   Have your student tell you what that is.

That's all for today.

Take care.

Greetings New Students and Parents,

Wow!  What a great 1st Day of school, other than the rain!  HA!

Hot and humid, but your kids were amazing.

Nothing really to worry about tonight.  If you haven't turned in the student information sheets yet, please do so by this week Friday.  Most are in thanks to having them out at Open House.

We did introduce our World Changer:

1706-1790
Scientist, Writer, and Inventor
One of our Founding Fathers
Discovered the elements of electricity with his kite and key trick, as well as invented bifocal glasses.

Some of the students wanted to take home a fun Quiz we took today.  The intention was to show them how I will NOT do assessments this way.  It was fun.

Looking forward to tomorrow already!  Take care and bring on the cooler weather!

Sincerely,

Mr. K

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Tuesday night:

1.  Math:

Kiwis:  Just page 151

Mango and Papayas:  Pages 151 and 152

We worked on using fraction lines today in class, and looking at the way we can blend 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 altogether on the same line.

On number 1 on page 151 we ONLY need to record greater than or less than symbols.  It is recommended to use the fraction line (IT WILL HELP), but you don't need to write anything on there.

Problem 2 forces you to record the letter on the number line.

Don't forget on 3 and 4, the oranges are easily the heaviest fruit, and the apples are clearly the lightest.

Come ready to ask questions on Thursday.

2.  Don't forget you have Science and Social Studies tests next week Thursday and Friday.

1.  Math:

Welcome back.  We started Unit 7 today.  (Comparing Fractions with different denominators)

Remember our two new ideas:

1.  If the fractions have different numerators, but the same denominator, then whichever fractions have the greater numerator is BIGGER!

2.  If the fractions have different denominators, but the same numerators, then we need to look at which denominator is smaller, because that means it has BIGGER pieces/parts.

Homework for all groups:  pages 149 and 150

2.  Social Studies:

Study guide was made in class today for the Southwest Region.  Map test will be Thursday, April 23.

3.  Science:

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Greetings one and all,

Here is the homework for a Thursday night:

1.  Math:

OK, tomorrow is the day for our Unit 4 Test.

Several things to use to review and study tonight:

1.  The quizzes we just took on Tuesday (3 and 4).  Great review.  Really those questions on quiz 3 are even tougher than the ones you'll see tomorrow, but they will help get you ready.

2.  We took a practice test on Wednesday and corrected it today in class.  That is also perfect for reminding you of the key vocabulary terms:  prime, composite, factor pairs, situation equations, and solution equations.

3.  I'd also take home you hard cover book tonight to check vocabulary terms and simply flip through some of the unit 4 pages to double check the sample problems.

*Don't forget...tomorrow's test is multiple choice, so use your good test taking skills, such as crossing out silly answers or answers you simply know are wrong, and double checking the remaining choices.

You're ready!!!  You'll do great.

*You also need a BOX, and 2-2 liters of pop (EMPTY)!!

Thanks,

MR. K

Greetings one and all,

Great Wednesday today!  I feel like we were able to do a tremendous amount of work in class.  The kids were really on topic and working hard.  After some strange snow days, we've got our groove back!

Here is the homework for a Wednesday night:

*Reminder, with Monday off we did not start a new week of spelling, so no Words Their Way.

Math:  Unit 4 practice Test to be completed at home TONIGHT!  Easier than the quizzes, which were TOUGH.

Reading:  We did a journal entry in class in which we asked how TIME affects our stories.  If that didn't get done, it's homework.

Writing:  We finished filling in our first graphic organizer for Literary Essays.  If that didn't get finished in class it's homework.

*Keep reading...55 days till the reading goals are due.

*Don't forget, 2 pop bottles (2-liters), and a box for Friday.

Thanks,

MR. K

Thursday, January 29, 2015

Well...the worst thing did happen.  School is closed so no Lansing trip today.

Do NOT fear.  We have a chance to reschedule the trip.  Mrs. Fire will work on that on Friday when we get back.  Parents we will refund your chaperon $ if you are unable to go on the date we reschedule.

In the meantime...how about a chance for some learning on a "ice" day?

Go to www.dogonews.com and read/watch any news article we have not already used in class.  Read all the way to the bottom, you'll find 3-4comprehension questions.  Complete those questions, in complete fourth grade sentences, on another paper and turn them in Friday for a $10 K buck!  You may do as many as you like!  Always good to catch up on the news.

Take care.  Again...don't worry, we'll figure a new plan for Lansing and get it sent out to you soon!

Sincerely,

Mr. K
